EBONY AND IVORY NETSUKE OF HOTEI
The lucky god Hotei is standing bald and with a naked belly, holding a fan and a magic tama pearl. His robes are made from dark ebony wood with fine engraved decorations, and his body as well as the obi, which is tied into a bowtie in the front, is made from ivory. The himotoshi are designed ingeniously – one ringed in ivory in the back and the other hidden in a removable foot, which is of a slightly different color than the other one. The signature on the underside reading TOYOSAI. Possibly a student of Tomochika from Tokyo.
