WALRUS TUSK IVORY RYUSA MANJU DEPICTING RIHAKU

A beautiful choice piece of walrus tusk ivory carved into a luscious ryusa manju depicting leafy stalks of bamboo, a thatched hut and many clouds. The center is inlaid with a silver-gilt figure depicting the poet Rihaku (in China, Li Bai) next to a huge double gourd filled with sake (the drink of the immortals). Central himotoshi in the back.

A poem by Rihaku which fits this scene nicely follows: Facing my wine, I did not see the dusk, falling blossoms have filled the folds of my clothes. Drunk, I rise and approach the moon in the stream, birds are far off, people too are few.
